Common Questions

Before You Book a Table

Straight answers about how reviews are written, what we taste, and how spots get featured.

How do you choose which restaurants to review?

We focus on chef-driven kitchens, emerging wine estates, and producer markets across Cape Town, Johannesburg, and the Garden Route. Each place is visited anonymously at least twice — once for the full menu, once for a focused tasting — before we write a word.

Do you pay for your meals or accept invitations?

Every meal is paid for out of pocket. Invitations are declined unless the kitchen agrees to a fully anonymous visit. This keeps the criticism honest and the praise earned.

What does your scoring system actually measure?

We score four things separately: seasonal menu execution, wine pairing logic, service rhythm, and value for the setting. The final rating is a weighted average, not a gut feeling.

How do you handle negative reviews?

We publish them the same way we publish praise — with specifics. If a dish failed, we say why and what the kitchen could adjust. Restaurants get a right to reply before publication, and their response runs alongside the review.

Can a restaurant request a review?

Yes, but it doesn't change the process. A request just puts a place on our list. The visit stays anonymous, the meal is paid for, and the score follows the same criteria as everything else we cover.
